For a long time, I struggled with my ADHD. I thought it was a problem for a very long time (this is for another post) It often felt like a never-ending battle to manage my symptoms while trying to navigate life, owning my own business, and of course motherhood. It was like a rollercoaster. And, to boot- Traditional medications didn’t sit well with me, often leading to anxiety and other side effects that made things even harder on everyone in my life and of course me. Anxiety was one of the biggest culprits, even practically crippling me during testing while in nursing school. It was ultimately one of the reasons I left nursing school as a 4.0 student. It was my dear friend Victoria Richardson who does magic brain retraining, that help me view this shit through a new lens… I’ve started to see my ADHD as less of a burden and more of a superpower.
I’ve realized that the energy and unique way my brain works are assets, not just for me but for others around me as well. I've been able to hone in on ability to see/hear all the things around me. Pretty cool when you think about it. Whether I’m managing my household, supporting a mama in the birth room, or coming up with creative solutions for my business, my ADHD allows me to think differently and keep going when others might get tired. It allows me to be the creator I love to be. However, there are definitely times when I need to focus on one task and that’s where I’ve decided to take a new approach.
Thanks to my new therapist, I’ve been given a protocol that doesn’t involve medication. I’m pretty darn excited to share these supplements that I've been using in my daily routine and how each one is playing a role in my journey. If you’ve been struggling to manage your ADHD or are looking for a way to help you focus naturally, these might be a great addition to your routine. I’ve included affiliate links to the products on Amazon, so you can easily find and try them too.
1. NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine)
NAC is a powerful antioxidant that helps reduce oxidative stress in the brain, which is crucial for individuals with ADHD. By supporting detoxification and cellular health, NAC helps me stay clear-headed without the anxiety that stimulants used to bring. It's like giving my brain a gentle but effective boost. I am told that this helps with inflammation as well. I cant wait to feel the long term affects.
2. Magnesium Oil Spray
Magnesium is my go-to for relaxation, especially because ADHD can sometimes make it hard to wind down. Many of us with ADHD are deficient in magnesium, which can make symptoms worse. This spray has been a game-changer for me, helping me relax and focus, especially during times when my energy is high, but I need to be calm.
3. FreshCap Ultimate Mushroom Complex
I was shocked when my therapist suggested this, but i was also thinking of all the meds Ive tried in my last 2 years. plus, Mushrooms are nature's gift to the brain, and this complex is packed with all the good stuff. Lion’s Mane, Reishi, and Chaga work together to support cognitive function, reduce stress, and boost my immune system. I find that this supplement helps me maintain clarity and mental endurance, especially when I need to be at my best for my clients.
4. Thorne Memoractiv
This nootropic supplement from Thorne is designed to support memory, focus, and cognitive function. Seriously, exactly what I need when I’m in the birth room or deep in planning mode. It’s packed with ingredients that enhance brain function without the harsh side effects I used to get from traditional medications.
Final Thoughts
Embracing my ADHD as a superpower has been a transformative journey. While I’m grateful for the energy and creativity it brings me, I also know there are moments when I need a little extra support to focus. This new supplement protocol has given me hope that I can continue to harness the strengths of my ADHD while minimizing the challenges.
